ABC Nightline: America's Cup attracting a new crowd

ABC, one of the top television networks in the United States, featured the America's Cup on its Nightline program on Tuesday night.

The focus of the segment was on building the audience for America's Cup sailing through the changes introduced for this Cup - the extreme wing sail catamarans, the new television technology like AC LiveLine, the close to shore race courses, and the physical demands the racing imposes on the sailors.

"We've strapped heart rate monitors on the guys and honestly, you look at the results, and it looks like a couple of guys having heart attacks," ORACLE TEAM USA skipper Jimmy Spithill told the Nightline reporter.

Speaking of the changes introduced for the 2013 America's Cup, Spithill acknowledged that some traditionalists may not agree with all of the new initiatives, but he concluded, "This is the way forward."

And after a ride on the back of an AC45, Nightline agreed.
