It may still be winter in the Northern Hemisphere, but San Francisco Bay is jumping like it’s the middle of summer.

The youth sailors participating in the first selection series for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup took to San Francisco Bay for another day of crew training.

Tacks, jibes, sets and douses were all performed as the six crews become more comfortable with the AC45 before racing begins on Wednesday.

The amateurs weren’t the only ones enjoying the fresh westerly breeze in the middle of winter. So were the professional sailors of ORACLE TEAM USA and Artemis Racing.

The defender and challenger of record, respectively, for the 2013 America’s Cup both had their AC72 cats on the bay. Coincidentally, they were running through many of the same maneuvers that the youth sailors were practicing, albeit with a bit more (load) on the line.

Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, Emirates Team New Zealand took advantage of a brilliant summer day to take its second boat out for its first sail. The Kiwis’ new AC72 is dubbed Aotearoa, the Maori word for New Zealand that is commonly translated as “land of the long white cloud.”
