Racing at ACWS San Francisco, the first event of the 2012-13 ACWS racing season, is set to begin Wednesday, Aug. 22, but the Race Village at Marina Green will open Tuesday, Aug. 21.
Marina Green is a popular, 74-acre expanse of land between Fort Mason to the east and the Presidio to the west overlooking San Francisco Bay. On any given day the area is packed with tourists and residents of San Francisco, exercising, enjoying a picnic or simply lounging about and watching the world pass by.
During ACWS San Francisco, Marina Green will be a prime viewing spot with set up along the sea wall for 1,200 people. A second set of bleachers able to accommodate 400 people is set up on the peninsula that houses Golden Gate Yacht Club and St. Francis Yacht Club. Both sets of bleachers will be open to the public free of charge during Tuesday’s practice racing, and will be ticketed seating during race days.
The Marina Green will also host many exhibits such as the Healthy Ocean Project, America’s Cup Exhibition by Louis Vuitton, public stage for pre- and post-race sailor presentations and the PUMA and team clothing stores. A large screen will broadcast the racing, and concession stands are planned for the hungry and thirsty.
A kids’ zone and interactive exhibit are planned, as is the Digital Boathouse, a new exhibit where race fans and media can engage in real-time access to original content and conversation around the races.
Daily stage presentations include the America’s Cup Morning Show (10:00 am), a dock-out show (1:00 pm), live commentary during racing and a dock-in show (4:00 pm).
The ACWS San Francisco Race Village is open daily 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, except on Saturday, Aug. 25, when it is open until 8:00 pm. A free concert featuring Dr. Dog begins at 5:00 pm Saturday and concludes at 8:00 pm.
