Note: With the second AC World Series San Francisco fast approaching (Oct. 2-7), we’ll be previewing the teams that’ll be competing in the lead-up to racing.
Crew: Terry Hutchinson (skipper/helmsman), Sean Clarkson (wingsail trimmer), Julien Cressant (bow), Thierry Fouchier (headsail trimmer), Iain Percy (tactics)
Artemis Racing – White skipper Terry Hutchinson is the reigning AC World Series match racing champion, who scored a 3-point victory over ORACLE TEAM USA SPITHILL in the first season.
At the AC World Series San Francisco in August, Hutchinson and crew placed third in the match racing championship (losing in the semifinals to eventual champion ORACLE TEAM USA COUTTS), but were undone by some bad luck in the fleet racing championship. Hutchinson had a brilliant start in the fleet race finale and led the race at the first three mark roundings, but the crew caught an anchor line on a daggerboard and dropped from contention.
At AC World Series San Francisco, Hutchinson will welcome back tactician Iain Percy to the crew. Percy sailed at the AC World Series last November, and then took time off to concentrate on his Star campaign for the London Olympics. Percy won a silver medal at the Games, and now looks to renew a partnership that has worked well in the past.
“It’s all about developing confidence and learning how to race the boat well and learning its subtleties,” Hutchinson says. “Personally, I have a lot of room to get better. That’s where the opportunities are in front of us.”
Last week Artemis announced it would field a second entry in the field, Artemis Racing – Red and led by new team member Nathan Outteridge, the gold medalist in the 49er Class at the London Olympics.
Prediction: Artemis Racing – White is always in the hunt for the match racing championship podium, but the crew has had trouble on the start line in the fleet races. If Hutchinson can sort that out, they’ll be a contender for both podiums. Artemis Racing – Red has a talented new helmsman who’ll be settling in to his surroundings.
