Garth grew up sailing out of Wakatere Boating Club, Auckland, New Zealand. He has competed since the age of 9 in all junior dinghy classes. Along the way, gaining top results including 3rd in the P-Class Tanner Cup and then winning the NZ Starling National Championships.

At 18, he decided that in order to achieve his ambition of becoming a top professional sailor, the best pathway was through the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme. After 2 successful years he graduated gaining top national and international results. During this time in conjunction with his sailing Garth also completed and graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Auckland.

For the last 3 years Garth has been Phil Robertson’s Mainsheet and Tactician onboard the match racing team, Waka Racing. They are currently the youngest team on the World Match Racing Tour. He also filled the same roll for America’s Cup veteran Magnus Holmberg for a number of WMRT Events in 2010.

Recently Garth has had the opportunity to get involved with multihull sailing, training and racing with China Team on the AC45 in the America’s Cup World Series.
