Behind closed doors

ORACLE Racing’s media day yesterday drew 80 folks from TV, print and radio outlets to Pier 80. They were entertained with a tour of the base that included stops at the sail loft, USA 17 and the boatbuilding shed. The day revealed the inner workings of the team in ways never before seen and the show of openness was noted in many of the stories.

Not all, however, were comfortable with the idea, such as designer Dirk Kramers. As Kramers put it, the design team felt like they were dropping their pants.

“We’re working hard to come up with the best mousetrap to win this event,” said Kramers. “We’d just like the other guys to figure it out for themselves and not show them what we’re doing.”
