The look and feel of summer

Posted on 24 February 2012

This is exactly what we want to see every day in September 2013, but we didn’t expect it this late in February. Warm weather during this week’s training session – inland temps have peaked near 80 degrees this week – has brought the seabreeze in like its summertime.

Our skipper Jimmy Spithill said it best, “It was a fantastic day. We had champagne conditions, 18 to 20 knots reaching back and forth across the Bay.”

Of all the locales I’ve shot, San Francisco Bay is just the best and among my favorite places. Every day around 1230 the show begins: the breeze fills in, pushing back a light cloud cover to reveal blue skies and letting the tide express itself.

It’s tough work bouncing around in the photo boat trying to keep up. In these pictures the 45’s are topping out around 30 knots! We’re at full throttle all the time – and that’s not flat water!

But we, the photography crew, are looking forward to the future. Can you imagine this type of action from the AC72’s? We’re gonna need bigger photo boats.
