Bryce's role
Date of Birth: June 20, 1979
Place of Birth: Brisbane, Australia
Nationality: Australia
Position/responsibility: Rigger, Reserve Crew
Bryce joined ORACLE Racing in January 2006.
“I was with the Swedish team, Victory Challenge, in December 2005 and we’d just moved to Valencia,” says Bryce. “The team was at a hard stage in the campaign. At the same time ORACLE Racing needed a rigger and I had the specialties they required. I was fortunate to get the job and have never regretted the change.”
Bryce has been a dedicated sailor since he was 15 years old, having competed in one-design and offshore regattas. He’s raced skiffs such as the 18-footer and 49er and a handful of Sydney-Hobarts, one of the iconic distance races.
“I really enjoy the offshore racing deep down,” says Bryce. “I’ve done about seven Sydney-Hobarts with wins, near wins, perfect weather, the worst weather and some great people, so combined that holds a high achievement for me.”
Last year he crewed for ORACLE Racing skipper James Spithill on the RC 44 yacht 17, which won the 2010 RC 44 World Championship and match racing championship.
“We missed the first regatta of the year, but were on the podium for the season championship and won the worlds,” says Bryce. “That was great and I really enjoyed the group of guys we toured with.”
Bryce has also had a brush with royalty – rock-n-roll royalty, that is. Bryce once served as caretaker for the house of the late George Harrison, one of the “Fab Four” who were The Beatles.
“I’m not sure if it was a project, but it lasted for about 10 months,” says Bryce. “I was fortunate enough to get to meet him. It was a great time and memory I’ll never forget.”
