Kevin's Role
Date of Birth: July 5, 1980
Birthplace: Auckland, New Zealand
Nationality: New Zealand
Position: Aerodynamic Analyst, Project Manager
Kevin is one of the design team’s youngest members. He joined ORACLE Racing early in the lead-up to the 33rd America’s Cup when Mike Drummond was looking for an assistant with engineering background.
For the 34th Cup Kevin is involved in sail research and development of the soft headsails for the catamarans, specifically integrated soft membrane mold design, tape layout design and engineering, and soft membrane structural optimization using finite element analysis.
Prior to joining ORACLE Racing Kevin was a weather analyst for another Cup team. He graduated University of Auckland with a mechanical engineering degree.
In his “younger” days Kevin enjoyed great success in youth sailing. He’s a past New Zealand National Champion in Laser II, 420, Laser Radial and P Class dinghies. His crowning moment came in 1998 when he won the ISAF World Youth Championship in the two-person 420 class. While that victory is his personal highlight, he also says winning the 33rd Cup was “an amazing feeling after a very long, emotionally charged project.”
Kevin finds great pleasure getting away from the computer and doing “field research” on the water, seeing the fruits of his labor in action.
