Matthew joined ORACLE Racing Team during the lead-up to the 33rd America’s Cup, but he made a tremendous impact. As boat director for USA 17, he was a key figure transforming the giant trimaran’s performance from its launch configuration.
Matt first won the America's Cup with Team New Zealand in 1995 and was with the team for its successful defense in 2000.
He sailed with the OneWorld program in 2003 before returning to Team New Zealand for the 32nd America's Cup. A regular on the grand-prix circuit and match racing tour, Matt also sailed in the 1993-94 Whitbread Round the World Race with Dennis Conner on Winston. In 1992 he won the ISAF Match Racing World Championship with team CEO Russell Coutts.
As a boatbuilder, Matt helped build the winning yachts for Team New Zealand in 1995 and 2000.
