1966
Burr Bartram's right-hand man Bill Strawbridge commissioned Olin J. Stephens to build his third victorious America's Cup defender. By conceiving this boat, Stephens made a breakthrough. He very quickly hit on the idea of a separate keel and rudder, as did his colleague Dick Carter of Boston on some ocean racers.
Olin tested his idea with models in the Stevens Institute tank test. This configuration allowed him to reduce the wetted surface and to extend the keel by a trim tab. By putting the rudder further aft, he improved its effectiveness.
Mario Taraboschia made the drawings of the yacht under supervision from the S & S firm. Olin Stephens decided to put all the Barient designed winches, the coffee grinders and seven crewmen below deck. This lowered the center of gravity as much as possible. The boom was lowered very close to the deck, improving the mainsail ratio and its effectiveness to windward.
1967
When Intrepid was launched it was a big surprise for all.
As with the 1937 Ranger performance, Intrepid dominated all the other defense candidates, Constellation, American Eagle and Columbia, and lost only one race, becoming the undisputed 1967 America's Cup defender.

In 1967, Intrepid crushed Dame Pattie.
1969
Burr Bartram and Bill Strawbridge entered Intrepid for the 1970 America's Cup, after its 1967 win. Two new defender candidates were also built, Heritage US 23 (Charles Morgan's design) and Valiant US 24 (Olin J. Stephens' design).
Intrepid was deeply altered by the young designer Britton Chance, Jr. Its hull and rigging were modified. The surface area and the volume of the keel were reduced. By increasing the hull volume from the maximum beam to the stern, the bustle was blown up like a balloon. The rudder was set 1.20 m further aft, made smaller and controlled with a two-wheel steering gear. Three extra tons of ballast were put in the re-designed and recast keel. The boom was lowered and shortened.
1970
Intrepid easily won the selections trials against American Eagle, Heritage and Valiant, the latter the first S & S new design not to be selected (except 1962) to defend the Cup. Intrepid was selected as the 1970 America's Cup defender. It was just the second time since 1898-1901 and Columbia that such a fact occurred.
America's Cup races: September 15 to 28, 1970 in Newport, Rhode Island -

Intrepid defended the America's Cup against the Australian challenger Gretel II
America's Cup Course:
Olympic Course - total distance: 24.3 miles - Start at a buoy anchored 7 miles, SSE (magnetic) towards the Brenton Reef Light Tower.
First leg is directly into the wind (windward leg). Second leg is a reaching leg as the third one, fourth leg to windward, fifth leg is a running leg, then the sixth and last leg is a windward one to the finish.
Races: five sailed.
Results:
Intrepid beat Gretel II by four wins to one.
- September 15, first race. Wind at start: 109°, 20 knots. Wind at finish: 110°, 12-15 knots. Intrepid beat Gretel II by 5 minutes 52 sec.
- September 20, second race. Wind at start: 238°, 6 knots. Wind at finish: 226°, 9 knots. Gretel II beat Intrepid by 1 minute 07 seconds. Gretel II disqualified, Intrepid wins.
- September 22, third race. Wind at start: 236°, 10 knots. Wind at finish: 230°, 18 knots. Intrepid beat Gretel II by 1 minute 18 sec.
- September 24, fourth race. Wind at start: 076°, 10 knots. Wind at finish: 120°, 4-6 knots. Gretel II beat Intrepid by 1 minute 02 sec.
- September 28, fifth race. Wind at start: 360°, 9-10 knots. Wind at finish: 045°, 5 knots. Intrepid beat Gretel II by 1 minute 44 sec.
Except for the first race, the average result between the two contenders was very close. Alan Payne's design was fast and the lack of experience on the part of the Australians made the difference. For the second race Gretel II was disqualified and the win went to Intrepid…
Intrepid won its second America's Cup.

Intrepid sold to International Geographic Foundation. Its homeport was Miami.
