1999 - 2000
The 1999 - 2000 Louis Vuitton Cup was sailed off Auckland, from 18 0ctober 1999 to 6 February 2000.

The contenders were: Young Australia 2000 AUS-29, Young America USA-53, America True USA-51, Luna Rossa, be hApy SUI-59, Stars & Stripes USA-55, 6eme Sens FRA-46, AmericaOne USA-49, Bravo Espana ESP-47 and Asura JPN-44.

Luna Rossa, skippered by Francesco de Angelis raced the Louis Vuitton Cup finals (26 January - 6 February) against AmericaOne skippered by Paul Cayard.
After an incredible series of nine races, with both teams holding the lead at one point or another, the Italians were able to beat in the Americans in the last race to win the series and advance to the America's Cup.

For the first time since 1870 (first ever America's Cup Challenge), the United States did not race in the America's Cup, as Prada went on to race the defender, Team New Zealand.

Races: four sailed.

Race Course: 18.55 nautical miles off Auckland, six legs windward leeward course with downwind finish.

Results:

Team New Zealand beat Luna Rossa by five wins to nil!

- 20 February 1st race, 18.55 miles: Team New Zealand beat Luna Rossa by 1 minute 17 seconds.
- 22 February 2nd race, 18.55 miles: Team New Zealand beat Luna Rossa by 2 minutes 43 seconds.
- 26 February 3rd race, 18.55 miles: Team New Zealand beat Luna Rossa by 1 minute 39 seconds.
- 1st March 4th race, 18.55 miles: Team New Zealand beat Luna Rossa by 1 minute 49 seconds.
- 2nd March 5th race, 18.55 miles: Team New Zealand beat Luna Rossa by 48 seconds.

In its quest for the 2000 America's Cup, Luna Rossa was defeated by Team New Zealand. Its performances were good, although the Kiwis never appeared to be threatened.
