Heavy loads keep teams on shore

Strong winds on Monday, and a heavy sea surge today have kept the 12 teams of the 32nd America’s Cup on shore.

Over the course of the day Monday, strong winds consistently in excess of 25 knots kept the boats on the hard, with none of the teams eager to risk damaging equipment in training. Although there is no hard wind limit restricting racing, there is an understanding between the teams and the race committee that this combination of wind and sea conditions would likely be too much for starting a race.

“It’s not always just wind that makes it dangerous for these boats,” says Peter Reggio, the Principal Race Officer, who arrived in Valencia this week for the Louis Vuitton Acts. “Today the wind is reasonable, the sea state is pretty rough still.”

Today the teams have remained ashore as well, although the wind has abated somewhat. The problem now is the heavy swell that the waves generated. Waves as high as two-metres are pounding into the Valencia shoreline, and again, the conditions are simply too risky.

Cameron Dunn, tactician and sailing team manager from Mascalzone Latino – Capitalia Team says that, “in these conditions, we can’t really sail. The waves are over two metres and nobody wants to risk anything with the Louis Vuitton Acts just a couple of weeks away.”
