Team Alinghi, formed in the summer of 2000, was charged with the enormous task of winning the America’s Cup. On March 2nd 2003, this mission was accomplished with Alinghi sweeping Team New Zealand 5 – 0, to win the 31st America’s Cup. With this victory, Alinghi brought the America’s Cup to Europe for the first time in 152 years.
Team Alinghi is an international team based in Switzerland. It carries the colours of the yacht club, Société Nautique de Genève.
Team Alinghi’s vision is to “win the America’s Cup 2007, earn respect and recognition as a world class sports team, while sharing its passion for sailing.” The team will participate in many events leading up to the 32nd America’s Cup.
Team Alinghi appears to be well-positioned to mount a fearless defence of its title in 2007, with most of its key personnel retained, and with just enough new faces to keep the ‘old guard’ on its toes.
Ernesto Bertarelli, CEO of Serono Intl. SA, is the principal behind Alinghi, as well as an integral part of the sailing team, serving as navigator.
Renowned America’s Cup veteran, Grant Simmer is the Team General Manager, and also oversees the design team.
The sailing team is led by Olympic legend, Jochen Shuemann. As Sports Director of Team Alinghi, Schuemann can count on many top sailors including Brad Butterworth, and Peter Holmberg, to name just a few of the outstanding members of Team Alinghi.
