ORACLE TEAM USA enjoyed a sun-kissed day yesterday for the launch of its second AC72 wing sail catamaran. Team members said the sleek speedster is a refinement of Boat 1, which was launched last September and then re-launched in February.
“We’ve learned a lot from foiling Boat 1,” said team skipper Jimmy Spithill. “We’ve made some changes to our foils, to our aero packages on this boat, and then there are a lot of refinements in the systems and how the guys sail the boat. There’s so much that’s gone into Boat 2, and there’ll be so much that goes into it in the future.”
The sun-splashed day meant that the wind would kick in at some point. Just as the team was hoping to go for a shakedown sail after the launching ceremony, the seabreeze piped up to 20 knots and the team thought better of going for a sail. There are too many refinements to risk damage.
“This boat is a little bit different from the last one,” said design director Dirk Kramers.
“We’ve changed a few things around in trying to improve the aerodynamic features and there are still a few things to come, which we’ll see in the next few months. But this is just one step along the way.
“It’s really about how you put the whole package together,” Kramers continued.
“Sometimes one area becomes a bit more import than another, but in the big picture you have to make sure you have no weaknesses. You have to make sure you do everything well, or well enough.”
