America’s Cup

To compete for the America’s Cup, one must first win the Louis Vuitton Cup. The Louis Vuitton Cup is the America’s Cup Challenger Series, whose winner earns the right to compete in the America’s Cup Finals.

Established in 1983, the Louis Vuitton Cup has been held whenever there has been more than one challenger team for the America’s Cup. Its role is twofold – to select the best team among the challengers, and to prepare the winner for success against the Defender in the following America’s Cup Match.

Significantly, 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the first Louis Vuitton Cup which took place in Newport, Rhode Island in 1983. Louis Vuitton will also serve as Official Timekeeper for the 34th America’s Cup.

For Louis Vuitton, this 30-year partnership with the America’s Cup – the longest and most successful partnership in sport – is not only significant; it is also highly symbolic. The America’s Cup and Louis Vuitton are two sagas of modern times. Founded in the mid-19th century – the America’s Cup in 1851 and Louis Vuitton in 1854 – both have cherished the spirit of challenge and the taste for adventure.
