The America’s Cup Event Authority has embraced the opportunity to showcase the 34th America’s Cup as a model sustainable event.
For the America’s Cup Event Authority, sustainability is about optimizing the social, economic and environmental impacts of our activities in delivering the 34th America’s Cup, to enrich the communities we visit and protect natural ecosystems.
The America’s Cup have committed to hosting an environmentally responsible event, which involves paying particular attention to areas such as minimizing air emissions and waste, and maximizing opportunities for energy efficiency and sustainable travel solutions.
America’s Cup is committed to ensuring the inclusion of a wide range of Bay Area communities in event activities through initiatives like youth engagement, local business initiative AC Connect and a volunteer program.
Economically, projections are for a positive economic impact linked to the San Francisco events in excess of $1billion for the Bay Area.
But sustainability is also about more than just how the America’s Cup Event Authority delivers its events. The America’s Cup Event Authority is also committed to leaving a lasting legacy for the benefit of future generations.
Through the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project, a collaboration between the America’s Cup and leading ocean conservation groups, the America’s Cup Event Authority will use the global reach and appeal of the world’s greatest sailing event to inspire millions of people to CARE about the Ocean, encourage public ACTION for the Ocean and leave a physical ocean LEGACY.

The America’s Cup has developed a Sustainability Plan that outlines our approach to delivering sustainableevents in San Francisco. This plan serves as our foundation, and was truly created by a village. Shaped by comments from our partners, City departments and commissioners, San Franciscans and local businesses, this plan gives us the opportunity to become a model sporting event and leave a positive legacy in the community, as well as on the sport of sailing.

The following sustainability themes are aimed at minimizing potential negative event impacts and maximizing legacy benefits:
Energy and Emissions - Optimize use of energy and minimize associated air emissions through efficient planning and technological innovation.
Resource Efficiency - Maximize natural resource and land use efficiency, minimize waste, and sustainably source materials and products.
Natural Habitats and Wildlife - Protect biodiversity, habitats and wildlife.
Inclusion - Provide an inclusive and welcoming experience for event spectators and the event workforce, and maximize legacy benefits for the City’s residents and businesses.
Engagement - Raise sustainability awareness, foster pro-environmental behavior and sustainable lifestyles

Sustainability highlights of the 2011 America’s Cup World Series events are presented in the 2011 Sustainability Summary. Sustainability is a journey, and we look forward to continued improvement.
In response the America’s Cup Event Authorities intention to be a carbon neutral event, a partnership has been initiated between the America’s Cup Event Authority and partner Althelia Ecosphere to develop a robust carbon compensation strategy. An innovative product - the America’s Cup Sustainability Credit– will be available to all stakeholders (teams, sponsors, contractors, media, spectators, etc.).
