RECON LOG: BUSY AND BLUSTERY IN CAGLIARI
Judging by the smiles after training, the Luna Rossa team are thoroughly enjoying their two-boat sessions in Cagliari, Sardinia with Peter Burling saying after the session on Tuesday (17th March): “Awesome day sailing today. We got a lot more wind than we thought, up to 20 knots at times and a bit of bumps, so that was nice racing the two boats against one another. It’s been a fun day.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Marco Gradoni who had the chance to sail with the three-time America’s Cup winner at length today up against the testing of Josh Junior on the B2 boat, sailing with Ruggi Tita.
Later in the day Margherita Porro swapped into the B2 Luna Rossa along with Maria Giubilei. Plenty of rotations going on across the Luna Rossa training sessions as they decide on their perfect combinations for the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta, Sardinia, coming up fast in a little over 60 days from the 21-24 May 2026.
As is standard now, the self-reported recon filed the following report after two boat AC40 sailing:
7-18 kts Southerly. Flat water at the beginning, choppy in the end
Comments / Objectives:
Started the day with the J1 and few line-ups for warming up the crew with very light wind. We then moved to some drills Upwind and Downwind. After a small break we then started with few pre-starts and some 1 lap races. The wind was around 7 knots for the first 15min of sailing but building quickly to 18 knots. Some more laps with the J2 and some starting drills. One more break for changing crew on Boat 2 and batteries on both boats and put the J3 on both boats. Wind slowly dropping after 3pm. We finished the day with 8-10kts. B2 sailed a bit longer (around 20min after B1 dock in).
