THE BIRTH OF FOILING IN THE CUP

The closest America’s Cup in history saw the Oracle Team USA team start the Match with a two point penalty and coming back from 8-1 down at one stage to win 9-8 against Emirates Team New Zealand in AC72 catamarans. The Kiwis had perfected the art of foiling upwind to take the early lead and looked certain to win but a lay day called by the Americans allowed them the time to get up to speed and Jimmy Spithill steering with Ben Ainslie calling tactics never looked back. The Cup was retained by the Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco.
